0808 (0.8 × 0.8 mm)

Ultra-fine-pitch displays, premium meeting rooms, brand displays

P1.2–P1.5

1010 (1.0 × 1.0 mm)

Fine-pitch meeting-room displays, commercial displays, data visualization

P1.5–P1.8

1212 (1.2 × 1.2 mm)

2020 (2.0 × 2.0 mm)

Larger-pitch indoor displays, stage backdrops, rental displays

Indoor displays are viewed from shorter distances and generally place greater emphasis on pixel density, black levels, and grayscale performance at low brightness. In addition to checking package dimensions, selection should account for uniformity, surface color, black-level consistency, resistance to impact damage, and color performance at low brightness.

Typical Compatibility Reference for Outdoor Displays

Pixel pitch (P value)

P6.7–P10

2727 / lensed 2745 / 3535

Long-range outdoor viewing, large-format advertising, high-brightness projects

Outdoor displays must overcome ambient light while withstanding temperature fluctuations, humidity, ultraviolet exposure, and the stress of long-term operation. Selection should therefore consider not only package size, but also target brightness, driving method, waterproof structure, encapsulant, lead-frame material, and long-term lumen depreciation.

For P10, for example, 2727, 2745, and 3535 packages may all be candidates, but they target different product positions. Typical full-screen brightness figures in the source proposal are approximately 6,500–12,000 nits for 2727, 15,000–20,000 nits for lensed 2745, and 6,000–10,000 nits for 3535. Actual brightness also depends on die efficacy, drive current, scan duty cycle, module design, and test conditions. These figures are therefore better used for preliminary solution screening than as the sole basis for direct cross-manufacturer comparisons.

4. The Relationship Between LED Dies and Packages: The Package Defines the Space; the Die Influences the Performance Tier

The LED die is the light-emitting core inside the package. The package provides structural space for the die, bonding wires, lead frame, and protective materials.

1. Package Size Defines the Spatial Boundary for the Die and Structural Design

Larger packages generally provide more room for arranging dies, bonding wires, and heat-dissipation structures. Smaller packages are better suited to high-density pixel layouts but impose tighter requirements on packaging precision, consistency, and thermal management.

Common configuration examples from the source proposal include:

· The extremely limited internal space of a 0202 package makes it suitable for ultra-fine-pitch products;

· 1010 is commonly used in fine-pitch indoor products such as P1.25 displays;

· 1515 is commonly used in outdoor P2.5–P3.0 products;

· 2727 is commonly used in outdoor P6.67–P10 products;

· 3535 offers more structural space and is suitable for high-brightness, high-load outdoor applications.

Specific die dimensions are not fixed solely by the package designation. Lead-frame structures, die configurations, and packaging processes vary among manufacturers. Buyers should ask suppliers to confirm die size or grade, individual-LED electro-optical parameters, and reliability-test data rather than inferring them from the external package dimensions.

2. Why Does the Same Package Size Come in Multiple Brightness Versions?

Different 2727 products may occupy multiple brightness and price tiers. Die size and luminous efficacy are important reasons, but they are not the only ones. Output per LED is also affected by drive current, junction temperature, encapsulation materials, optical structure, and color balance. Full-screen brightness is further influenced by scan method, duty cycle, mask design, and calibration settings.

Accordingly, neither “a larger package is always brighter” nor “a larger die is always better” is sufficiently accurate. A larger die generally offers greater output potential and a larger heat-dissipation area, but also increases cost. The comparison that truly matters is whether the product can reliably achieve the brightness required by the project at a reasonable current and temperature rise.

3. Three Matching Principles

Principle 1: Satisfy physical fit and pixel-layout requirements first. Fine-pitch displays generally require smaller packages, while larger-pitch outdoor products can use larger packages. Even then, the proportion of black surface area, viewing angle, and structural design must also be considered.

Principle 2: High-brightness requirements must be assessed as a complete electro-optical system. Package size defines the available design space, while the LED die, drive current, scan duty cycle, and optical structure jointly determine actual brightness.

Principle 3: Do not substitute extreme specifications for reliability validation. If a small-package product claims unusually high full-screen brightness, verify its test conditions, drive current, temperature rise, and lumen depreciation. If a large-package product has relatively low brightness, understand its die configuration and design goals to avoid paying merely for a “larger package.”

5. Choosing Gold or Copper Bonding Wires: Evaluate the Reliability System, Not Just the Material Name

Traditional SMD LED packages generally use bonding wires to connect the die to the electrodes. Common materials include gold and copper.

Gold wire’s main advantages are oxidation resistance, process maturity, and long-term bonding stability. It is commonly used for outdoor, high-brightness, and long-running projects with stringent reliability requirements. Copper wire offers good electrical and thermal conductivity as well as cost advantages, but demands tighter control of surface treatment, bonding, and packaging processes.

Selection should therefore not be reduced to “gold wire is always premium and copper wire is always low-end.” A more reasonable approach is:

· For projects exposed to high temperature and humidity, large temperature swings, continuous long-term operation, or high maintenance costs, give priority to solutions that have undergone thorough reliability validation;

· For conventional indoor displays, rental events, and cost-sensitive projects, a mature copper-wire solution can be selected provided that it meets service-life and stability requirements;

· Regardless of bonding-wire material, assess it together with the LED die, lead frame, encapsulant, soldering process, and aging-test results.
